Cookie Policy — ShelfScanner

Cookie Policy

Effective date: 30 May 2026  ·  Last updated: 30 May 2026

Short version: ShelfScanner does not use tracking or advertising cookies. We use browser localStorage to save your scanned library on your device. Third-party services (Google Fonts, Amazon, Bookshop.org) may set their own cookies when you interact with them.

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and provide information to site owners. "Similar technologies" include localStorage, sessionStorage, and pixel tags — this policy covers all of them.

2. What we use on ShelfScanner

2a. Browser localStorage (first-party, essential)

When you scan a bookshelf and receive results, ShelfScanner saves your detected book list to your browser's localStorage. This is not a cookie — it is stored locally on your device only, never transmitted to our servers, and persists across browser sessions until you clear your browser data.

This storage is essential to the core function of the app (saving your library). There is no way to use the scan feature without it.

Name Type Purpose Expiry
shelfscanner_library localStorage Stores your scanned book list on your device Until you clear browser data

2b. Google Fonts (third-party, functional)

We load typography (Noto Serif and Manrope fonts) from Google Fonts. When your browser fetches these fonts, Google receives a standard HTTP request that includes your IP address and User-Agent. Google may use this for analytics purposes under their own privacy policy.

Google Fonts does not set cookies directly. For details, see Google's Privacy Policy.

2c. Amazon Associates (third-party, affiliate)

When you click an Amazon affiliate link on ShelfScanner, Amazon places a cookie on your device to track purchases made within 24 hours. This cookie enables us to earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We have no control over Amazon's cookies.

Cookie Set by Purpose Duration
Various (session + persistent) amazon.com Tracks affiliate referral for commission attribution Up to 24 hours (session cookie for the purchase window)

See Amazon's Cookie Notice for full details.

2d. Bookshop.org (third-party, affiliate)

When you click a Bookshop.org affiliate link, Bookshop.org places a cookie to track purchases made within 30 days for commission purposes. We have no control over Bookshop.org's cookies.

Cookie Set by Purpose Duration
Various bookshop.org Affiliate referral tracking 30 days

See Bookshop.org's Privacy Policy for full details.

3. What we do NOT use

  • ❌ Advertising or retargeting cookies (Google Ads, Meta Pixel, etc.)
  • ❌ Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, Hotjar, etc.)
  • ❌ Social media tracking pixels (Facebook, TikTok, etc.)
  • ❌ Session recording tools (Clarity, FullStory, etc.)
  • ❌ A/B testing cookies from third-party platforms

We may add analytics in the future. If we do, we will update this policy and, where required by law, obtain your consent before setting any new non-essential cookies.

4. Cookie consent

ShelfScanner currently uses only essential functionality (localStorage for your library) and third-party cookies set only when you choose to click an affiliate link. Because we do not set our own tracking or advertising cookies, we do not currently display a cookie consent banner.

If you are in the EU/EEA/UK and have concerns about the Google Fonts request, you may block it using a browser extension such as uBlock Origin or by using a privacy-focused browser. This will not affect the core scanning functionality — it will only change the font rendering.

5. How to manage and delete cookies

You can control cookies and localStorage through your browser settings:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data

To clear ShelfScanner's localStorage specifically: open your browser's Developer Tools (F12) → Application tab → Local Storage → metathriving2dmax.site → delete the shelfscanner_library entry. Note: this will erase your saved book list.

Blocking third-party cookies from Amazon or Bookshop.org will prevent affiliate commission tracking but will not affect your ability to browse or purchase from those sites.

6. Changes to this policy

We will update this Cookie Policy if we add new cookies or change how we use existing ones. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Where required by law, we will notify you and/or request fresh consent.
